On this page, I have included demo activities which are the result of my experiments with different ways of using new technologies to deliver Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) modules via the web. I present my work here in reverse chronological order--starting from 1996 (at the bottom of the list on this page) and leading to the most current demo (at the top of the list) immediately to the right. NOTE: Instructors and CALL professionals are invited to discuss issues related to instructional media development in my blog:
Most of the demos listed on this page feature lessons and activities for students of English as a Second Language (ESL), or English as a Foreign Language (EFL) delivered using one or more of the following interactive technologies: QuickTime, Flash, Shockwave, QTVR, RealMedia, JavaScript, PHP, and more.
The newest additions: The LetsTalk Audio/Video Discussion Forums demonstrate further capabilities of Flash Communication Server technology. This is the ultimate in web-based guestbook forums. One visitor described it as an "audio/video blog". I created duber dot com VoiceMail in Flash MX to demonstrate the use of the audio recording, archiving and streaming capabilities of Flash Communication Server MX. It also turns out to be a very useful tool for my online classes and for my business. This technology is also used to power "Project We Say Tomato"--a "global language survey" which welcomes your participation. I created the Paralinguistic Basics Toolkit in Flash MX as a technology demonstration. It shows the sort of interactivity that is possible between the Flash player and a microphone and/or web camera. I created the two Aesop's Fable activities, "The Lion King" and "The Wolf and the Crane," using advance features available in Flash (version 5) to provide high-quality streaming audio and interactive animation even over slow modem connections. I created "Who Came?" using many of the ActionScript features of Shockwave Flash. Designed to stream even over a slow 28K modem connection, this exercise offers intensive practice of minimal pairs. Results are sent by email after "Tries" number ten and twenty. My Apartment: The Game makes use of Apple's QuickTime VR technology together with RealAudio's streaming sound and JavaScript technology which place the student in a highly immersive and realistic three-dimensional environment.
